Modern Warfare 3 on Top of Sales for this Year

It's a topsy-turvy world in console, portable, and desktop gaming. And new sales numbers for November from the NPD Group indicate just how wonky the market can be.
A good example is, total sales of all gaming-related objects (hardware and software) compared between the months of November 2011 and November 2010.

In total, sales of all-things-gaming reached three billion dollars in November 2011, but that's a scant four-tenths of a percent higher than last year's sales figures of $2.99 billion for the month.

If one were to just focus on gaming software sold, the industry would be hanging up the balloons and tossing confetti. That's because sales of both console and portable games shot up 15 percent between November 2010 and 2011, growing from $1.45 billion to $1.67 billion.

Leading the charge for November, predictably, was Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 – the shooter title for all three major consoles and the PC sold 6.5 million copies in the U.S. and the U.K. within the first 24 hours of its Nov. 8 launch. That translated to more than $400 million in instant revenue for its publisher, Activision, and the company claimed that it was the most successful opening day for just about anything in entertainment, ever.

Call of Duty's competing shooter title, Electronic Arts' Battlefield 3, took third place on the most-sold list for November. Splitting the two entities was Bethesda Softworks' big first-person RPG follow-up, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – a game that nearly outpaced the total lifetime sales of its predecessor, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, with its November sales alone.

Gaming hardware sales dragged down the overall gaming-related sales figures in November 2011, having dropped nine percent from $1.08 billion in 2010 hardware sales to $982.4 million in 2011. As for how these sales are split between the "big three" manufacturers, Microsoft reports that it sold 1.7 million units of the Xbox 360 in November, its ninth consecutive month leading the hardware charts. Nintendo says it sold 860,000 Wii consoles, 795,000 3DS handhelds, and more than 350,000 different handhelds from the company's mainstream Nintendo DS line. Sony hasn't released its hardware sales figures, but the company says that its Black Friday 2011 hardware sales were up 70 percent from Black Friday 2010.

Sales of gaming accessories tanked between November 2010 and November 2011, dropping 34 percent from $414.4 million to $273.8 million. [PCMag]
